About The New Learning Society

The New Learning Society (NLS) is an independent not-for-profit organization registered under the Society Act of British Columbia. Our Mission is to provide educational programs for children and adults that promote the growth of the whole person, with particular emphasis on an individualís independence, self-reliance and emotional well-being. Our Vision is to become recognized internationally as a Centre for Learning Excellence in Canada.

The NLS is governed by a Board of Directors which operates within a model that distinguishes between strategic leadership and operations/management. The Board and its Committees have distinct and complementary responsibilities in advancing the Mission of the organization. The Board provides the overall leadership and strategic direction for NLS. It then delegates authority and responsibility to Committees in a manner that provides a broad degree of freedom to exercise creativity and judgment to achieve the goals of the organization. The Board ensures that NLSís goals are clear, the parameters and approval points are established, and the evaluation criteria are mutually understood.

There are five ways in which the Board meets its leadership responsibilities:

  1. Defining the strategic direction of the organization
  2. Setting the macro policies of the organization
  3. Providing financial and legal stewardship
  4. Monitoring and evaluating organizational effectiveness
  5. Creating Committees and evaluating their output
